Natural Packaging

While meandering the aisles of a Colombian (as in South America) grocery store I came across these packages. It’s the outer shell of some type of fruit (some kind of melon I believe), dipped in a waxy substance and used as the package. I find it very interesting that they are using a truly natural and eco-friendly material for their packaging (other than the shrink wrap of course). I would also assume that the shells of these fruits would probably be the waste product from another industry (I doubt they would harvest these only for their outer skin) Also interesting how it relates to Randy's Packaging as Metaphor Series #3

What’s more is that the contents have absolutely nothing to do with the plant/fruit the package is made from. I’m sure there are packages out there using a similar approach (coconut shells come to mind as a likely candidate), but I would assume they would hold something related to the shell.

Contained in the shell is a sweet milk and sugar concoction similar to caramel. They were merchandised on the shelf in an aisle sitting next to boxes, not in a produce or other section. This approach actually made them quite noticeable.

Does anyone know of any similar examples?
